UN Secretary General Visited Kiribati

Posted by Amota Eromanga on June 15, 2012 at 2:25 PM

On Saturday afternoon, 4th September, 2011, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his team were met at the Bonriki International Airport by the Kiribati Government officials. The high level procession drove down the island until arriving at the Otintaai Hotel, Bikenibeu, where the team made their first short stop.

From the hotel, the UN delegation then proceeded to Eita village where the team received blessings from the community unimwane (old men) in a traditional way. Just before dark, the team arrived at the State House, Bairiki, where a bilateral meeting was held between Ban Ki-moon and President Anote Tong. On that same night, a warm welcome feast for the UN team was held also at the State House.

Speaking at the feast, the Secretary General stated his commitment in increasing world’s awareness and realistic actions towards the issue of Climate Change.

On his second day on the capital Tarawa, the Secretary General visited Tebikenikoora village – one of the most badly affected areas by rising sea level. He also planted a mangrove plant in the lagoon of Ambo village.

The UN team finally left Kiribati to New Zealand on Monday afternoon (5th September) on a Royal Australian Air Force aircraft.
