The Promise

Posted by Amota Eromanga on July 9, 2012 at 3:15 AM

When I was in Form 2, there was someone who was very special to me and that was Tokanteata, my best friend. Tokanteata was a real friend to me. She was so kind and always showed respect to her parents and to all her teachers. Tokanteata and I made a promise that we wouldn’t get married nor drink liquor until we got our jobs. I supported that so we swore to each other and if one of us broke that promise, we would never forgive each other.

A few months later, something went wrong - I broke our promise. The thing that I did was I now had a husband. My best friend did not know it. I asked my parents and relatives not to talk about it.

I really wanted to tell Tokanteata, but did not know where to start. I felt scared to tell her. She was a girl of her words and I knew for sure that she would never forgive me. So I kept it as my secret. At school, I kept my mouth shut and preferred to talk about something else. I knew that Tokanteata had not known anything since then.

Finally I decided to keep this secret for as long as I could. But as I did so, this worrisome question kept coming back, “What if my friend find out?” I just didn’t want to think of what her answer would be!
